It is reccommended that every few weeks, grower's drain their reservoir and clean and sterilize any pumps, air-stones and the inside of the reservoir. PBW and Star San work very well, and are safe to use.
Star San is an acid based sanitizer from Five Star. It is quick, odorless, tasteless and safe for most materials (except for softer metals). Star San creates foam when in action. This foaming insures coverage and contact time in larger vessels to better penetrate into the nooks and crannys. Any foam that is left behind in your reservoir will not harm you or your plants. The limited contact time coupled with the small amount required makes it very economical and convenient. This is a no rinse sanitizer that is perfectly safe and non-toxic.
